House Shoes for Lounging, but Can They Be for More?
There are many times that you don’t want to change out of your house shoes because they are so comfortable. But, if you do wear them outside for more than a quick jaunt to the mailbox, does that make you crazy? Are there times when house shoes are actually appropriate to your outfit?
If you have house shoes with soles, there are times when you can wear them outdoors, but think carefully about that. Slipping them on to take the kids to school on a cold morning is one thing, but wearing them to go to Parent’s Night at the school or an evening event is completely different. Comfortable is not always your best option for your outfits, after all.
Another tip to keep in mind is this: keep your house shoes for the house only and you might be saving the carpet. In fact, everyone in the family should have house only shoes or learn to kick off their shoes at the front door to pad around in stocking feet to protect all of the floors from dirt and germs that are tracked in. Athletic shoes are particularly bad about dragging in mud and muck because they have such deep soles and they just hang onto everything. If you think that all that is being dragged in is mud, guess again. By slipping into house shoes, especially shoes that are kept only for your house, you are saving the work of caring for your carpet as well as the other floors.
Any house shoes that are overly bright or cartoonish in appearance are definitely an inside the house kind of thing. Sure, you love looking down at the big, smiling face of that sappy bunny as you pad about your home, but are you still going to feel the same when you are out shopping at a department store and everyone is busy gawking at your slippers? The general rule of thumb is do not wear house shoes outside or in public if you are going to draw attention to yourself or if your mother would shout at you if she saw them on your feet.
The type of house shoes that you have might have some influence on whether or not you should wear them outside. For some designs, the fact that they have furry interiors implies that they were meant to transition from inside to outdoors. If you are one of those folks with cold feet, you will love these so much that you almost never want to take them off. Remember though, that house shoes are not always going to be the best thing to wear outside.
